The report from the National Oversight and Audit Commission sets out the number of pollution complaints made to county councils and the percentage of areas in each county affected by litter and pollution in 2021.

Over 3000 complaints were made to local authorities in the Shannonside region regarding pollution last year

It comes as figures show Leitrim is the county most affected by litter and pollution nationally.

The report from the National Oversight and Audit Commission sets out the number of pollution complaints made to county councils and the percentage of areas in each county affected by litter and pollution in 2021.Longford had the most complaints made during the year with 1,781, with 48 of those cases still outstanding. Roscommon had 883 complaints made during the year, with 943 cases dealt with including cases carried over from the previous year, and 320 cases still outstanding. 570 complaints were made to Leitrim County Council, 582 were dealt with over the year with 21 outstanding.

The figures also show that nowhere in Leitrim is considered unpolluted or Litter free. 77% of the county is considered slightly polluted while the other 23% is moderately polluted. 21% of Longford is Litter free, while 71% is slighly polluted, 7% moderate, and 1% considered significantly polluted. Roscommon has the highest percentage of litter free areas at 22%, with 77% of the county considered slightly polluted, and 1% moderately polluted.
