There were 142 vacant council houses across the Shannonside region in October of last year.
That's according to a report in the Sunday Independent yesterday which also states that there were a total of 4,000 council-owned properties empty across the country despite the housing crisis.
Figures contained in the report shows that Longford council owns the highest amount of properties locally at 2,140.
67 of the Longford council units were said to be vacant, but that figure doesn't include 49 properties listed as "allocated".

In neighbouring Roscommon, the council owns 1,516 housing units and 59 of them were recorded as vacant last October, with the council leasing 18 properties.
Leitrim council has the lowest vacancy rate locally with the local authority owning 985 units, of which 16 were listed as not being occupied.
Leitrim council was leasing 85 properties from private owners.
