In Leitrim a total 459 pupils are taking exams, that's made up of 214 girls and 245 boys.
Meanwhile almost 1,880 students are sitting their Junior Certificate across Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon.
Principal of Ballymahon Vocational School Michael O'Rourke says there was excitement but also a sense of nervousness at the school this morning.
"Some pupils didn't have the benefit of sitting a Junior Cert during those COVID years but this morning is a great start for them. They're heading into English, their unseen test. Read the questions thoroughly, re-read them as necessary and give a good honest account of themselves. That will pay dividends when the exam arrives in front of the examiners during the summer".
