Over 180 submissions have been made so far on the proposed options for the upgrade of the N61 route between Ballymurray and Knockroghery in south Roscommon.
The route takes up to 8,000 vehicles a day at Ballymurray and this level rises to over 13,000 vehicles a day on the approach to Athlone.
The road has a poor safety road due to a high number of junctions and direct accesses as well as other issues.
Six different options were published in November of last year and the public were invited to two consultation days which were held in Knockroghery.
Alan Mulryan who's engineer with responsibility of the project says the number of submissions is significant but not surprising.
