School teacher Maeve Reynolds is the party's sole candidate in Carrick after she was confirmed earlier this week.

He said growing frustration around the political system was one of the reasons he would not contest the June elections.

The Social Democrats candidate, who moved to Carrick in 2015, has spent six years managing the local National Council for the Blind charity shop.

He's accused the Government of dropping the ball on bread and butter issues such as immigration, healthcare and housing.

The funding was announced last week by Minister for Local Government and Planning, Kieran O’Donnell.

She thanked her family for their support, all those who voted for her, and fellow councillors and staff at Roscommon County Council.

The party has been dealt a blow in the county in recent months following confirmation that John Cummins, Orla Leyden and Joe Murphy would be withdrawing from political life.

He has paid tribute to his fellow councillors, family and staff and management of Leitrim County Council.
