The 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Ballinamuck will be commemorated in the coming weeks.
From the 7th to the 10th of September, a large scale re-enactment of the battle between the forces of General Humbert and Lord Cornwallis under the command of General Lake will take place
Humbert's defeat in Ballinamuck on the 7th of September 1798 marked the end of the main French incursion during the rebellion.
Re-enacters are due to arrive from Ireland and France, with the Battle of Ballinamuck Commemoration Committee recently appealing for over 100 volunteers to act as pikemen.
Longford councillor, Paraic Brady, says it's important to remember all those who died fighting in the local area.
"It's very important that we don't forget what happened in the past and that we remember all those who lost their lives and we've a mass on the Thursday to remember those people that died in the Battle of Ballinamuck. It is very important for the people of Ballinamuck and the surrounding area. Don't forget Ballinalee was involved, Granard was involved, so the whole of North Longford. It's important that we do remember the events that did happened and try re-enact them to the best of our ability as to what happened on the day".
