3 men are to appear in court after a burglary and dramatic Garda chase in County Westmeath yesterday evening.
Gardaí responded to reports of a break in at a house in the Ballynacargy area at around 5pm, where a quantity of jewellery was reported stolen.
The three men were spotted fleeing the scene in a vehicle a short time later, with Gardaí setting up ahead of them thanks to multiple calls from members of the public regarding the same vehicle driving dangerously.
Having failed to stop when prompted, Gardaí pursued the car on the N4 and R148 through Kinnegad and Enfield, where the suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot.
Gardaí conducted a search along with the Air Support Unit, Garda Dog Unit, and members from the Mullingar Detective Unit and Trim Garda Station.
Following an alert from Garda Dog Cooper, Gardaí located one suspect, while the thermal camera of the air support unit located the other two, allowing Trim Gardaí to arrest them.
According to the report on the Garda Siochána Facebook page, all three men in their 20s had attempted to evade Gardaí by jumping in the Blackwater River.
They were returned to the custody of a Garda Station in Westmeath where they were medically examined and given dry clothes.
They are due to appear before Athlone District Court later this morning.
