A 31-year-old man Longford man has appeared in court charged with stealing a car that was being defrosted by its owner outside a house in Longford town yesterday morning.
It's alleged the vehicle was taken at 6am on Friday morning before being discovered at a housing estate in Longford town several hours later.
A special sitting of Longford District Court today heard that the Grey Passat was taken from outside a house on Park Road in the town on Friday morning.
It's alleged the car was taken as it was running, with the keys in the ignition and the car was being defrosted by its owner.
Garda John Hanley gave evidence that the vehicle was subsequently recovered a number of hours later at the Cartron Breac housing estate just before 3pm and the accused was arrested at the scene.
He was subsequently brought to Longford Garda Station where he was charged with the unauthorised taking of the vehicle last night and made no reply.
Judge Alan Mitchell heard the car was recovered without any damage and the accused was granted bail subject to a number of conditions
He is due back in court again on the 9th of February.
