50 same sex marriages have been celebrated in the Shannonside region since the introduction of the Marriage Equality Act in 2015. The referendum saw a majority of voters enshrine the right of same sex couples to marry in the eyes of the law. In the last 9 years, 51 LGBTQ+ couples in Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon have tied the not.
Roscommon saw the highest number with 26 couples saying I do, followed by Leitrim with 16 weddings. Longford saw the lowest level locally, with 9 same sex couple getting married between 2015 and 2023.
