7 million euro has been allocated to active transport projects across the Shannonside region.
The funds were announced today by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan, with 290 million euro nationally going to local authorities for the works.
The Active Travel Programme funds important pedestrian and cyclist projects, including access to schools, urban greenways and some minor public transport improvement projects.
Roscommon received both the highest amount in funding in the region, and the most works funded.
21 projects were selected for a share of 2.5 million euro in funding, with the Ballaghaderreen Town Development works receiving one million euro.
Elsewhere in the county, Ballinalough Footpath and Bealnamulla, Athlone, Active Travel Schemes were awarded €280,000 and €200,000 respectively.
Longford County Council saw the same amount of funding with 2.5 million euro to be split in 14 projects, including €400.000 for the Battery Road Pedestrian
and Cycle Scheme in Longford Town.
18 initiatives in Leitrim were funded with 2 million euro, with significant grants for the Roosky Active Travel Scheme.
In total, the NTA is funding 1,200 Active Travel projects in the current tranche of funding.
