Around 80 people attended a protest yesterday evening outside a centre earmarked for up to 60 refugees in Athlone.
It’s after the Department of Integration confirmed the former Stella Maris nursing home in Baylough will accommodate international protection applicants.
The department says the centre will be ready for new arrivals shortly and it will accommodate families.
Independent councillor Paul Hogan, who attended yesterday’s protest, says Athlone has accommodated its fair share of refugees over the years.
