A Longford senator believes social media companies should fund awareness and education programmes that can be run through schools across the country.
The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Media heard this week that companies like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram should be encouraged to support or partially fund public awareness campaigns on online safety in conjunction with the Department of Education.
Senator Micheal Carrigy says that the internet giants need to do more to tackle online abuse, as well as anonymous accounts and trolling of people, especially children.
He says a key way to ensure everyone is safe online is through a process of education, especially of young people :
