A Longford senator is calling on the Oireachtas to reopen the Lough Ree power station.
The station was shut down in December of 2020 following a decision by the ESB.
Calls to reopen the station have grown louder as energy costs spiral.
North-Longford native, Micheál Carrigy says the facilities are there to be used.
"The reality is that we have the facilities there capable of producing power be it at Shannon bridge or in my local area at Lough Ree which has the capacity to produce 100 mega watts per hour and it can be done."
The ESB did commission a report to examine the possibility of reopening the site however junior minister Ossian Smyth explained that no viable alternatives were found for the existing site.
"The ESB commissioned an engineer report to see how the plants be used in the future and the options that were reviewed were looking at at using other types of fuel but these reports have not identified any viable use for these power plants."
