A Longford wildlife enthusiast is appealing to people to get involved in the campaign to help swifts breed successfully in this country.
Larry Mitchell from Longford Town says the bird which comes here every year from South Africa to nest and breed has seen its numbers decline by almost half in the last 15 to 20 years.
He says the birds traditionally build their nests on houses and other large structures, but modern building methods have meant fewer and fewer places available to them.
The Longford town resident says he wants to help people learn how to identify the birds, and find where their nests are, so they can try and encourage other swifts to make their way there.
