The Omicron variant will become the dominant strain of Covid-19 in Ireland within the next 10 days, according to a leading immunologist.
Professor Christine Loscher's comments comes as the gap between second and third vaccine doses was reduced to three months following new NIAC advice.
Up to now people vaccinated with anything other than Janssen had to wait at least five months for a booster.
Professor Loscher, says everything has to go into accelerating the booster campaign before Christmas due to the Omicron threat.
Meanwhile the Health Minister says pop up vaccination centres and longer opening hours are among the measures being considered to speed up the roll out of the booster campaign.
Hundreds of health care staff are to be redeployed to help accelerate the programme.
The Government says it'll also support GPs and pharmacies so they can administer as many boosters as possible.
