Some students attending the Athlone third level TUS campus this year are likely to have to resort to sleeping in their cars.
That's according to Students Union president Niall Naughton who says there were instances of students who had to do that last year.
He says with the accommodation crisis having deepened significantly over the past twelve months, it's inevitable they will see more cases again this year.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon the Roscommon student representative says the whole problem of trying to find somewhere to live in order to go to college is putting huge pressure on both students and their parents.
''They're crying to us on the phone, they're stressed out, they're worried, you know, and especially if you're a parent and you have a child coming to college for the first time. Even when they do secure the accommodation, the cost of rent is gone up, the inflation, it's absolutely ridiculous, so there again, they're facing another burden. And then we've also seen students in recent years, we pray to God, it doesn't happen this year, with students sleeping in cars. You know, we have seen homelessness and an awful lot last year and we've never experienced that before. We simply do not want that to be a case this year but unfortunately, it's going to be the case because there is no other solution. There's nothing being done and we need to see concrete action especially from the Government as well. Something needs to be done.''
