The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has criticised a local MEP over a tweet insulting the Gardaí. Speaking on X on Tuesday, Luke Ming Flanagan stated that an 'Garda Siochana are rotten to the core' in response to a story by news outlet 'The Ditch.' The story relates to the Westmeath Garda at the centre of the 'Bike case', who was cleared of any wrong doing when he gave a bike from a Garda Storeroom to a pensioner. Ming Flanagan went on mention a lack of change in the Gardaí following the Maurice McCabe Tribunal and stated ' you're not wanted in the Gardaí if you're honest.'
Responding to the Tweet, the X account for the AGSI called on MEP Flanagan to retract the comments, branding them as 'unfair and unnecessary.' While the General Secretary of the Association, Antoinette Cunningham, branded the Roscommon politician's comments as a 'disgusting insult' to the force. Luke 'Ming' Flanagan has stood by his comments however, saying that any attempt to silence him is 'profoundly undemocratic'.
