The chairperson of a Leitrim GAA club says AIB's decision to scrap plans to go cashless is a huge relief to the Ballinamore community.
On Tuesday the town's Gaelic club released a statement calling on the GAA to remove the bank as sponsor of the club championships.
Ballinamore was one of four local branches which was in line to see their ATM and cash services removed.
Sean O'Heslins Club Chairman Diarmuid Keegan believes their proactive response has shown the financial institution that rural communities will not stand for the downgrading of services.
It was a surprise it came so quick. The GAA and AIB are entwined and they're entwined in Ballinamore here. Our club was actually formed in the premises where the bank is today.
So many people have contacted the club today to say that they're relieved and it's an actual relief to people.
I think AIB needs to realise just how important they are in communities like ours, they're not just a bank, they're an important part of the community, like the GAA club.
So I think it's important that AIB just realise that and take stock of that. As well as that a lot of older people wouldn't be familiar with Internet Banking and that type of thing.
They had serious concerns and that's essentially the reason we released the statement.
We had contact as well regarding the statement from clubs in Kerry and Donegal and Galway voicing their support for our statement.
