Close to 13 million kilometres of local and regional roads will be eligible for a State Road grants in 2024. As part of annual road maintenance, Local Authorities have responsibility for the improvement and repair of roads, with works funded through local budgets. These council resources are supplemented by state road grants, with the selection and prioritisation of works decided by the local authority.
As it stands, Roscommon has the largest roads network at 3.7 million kilometres of eligible routes. That's followed by Cavan at 2.9 million kilometres and Monaghan at 2.4 Million. Leitrim and Longford County Councils manage 2.1 and 1.5 million kilometres of eligible roads respectively. Nationally, the Government is responsible for subsidising 92 million kilometres of road repairs and upgrades.
