Close to 15,000 safeguarding complaints have been reported at HSE services across the Shannonside Northern Sound region in the last five years.
The safeguarding concerns relate to any reported or alleged incident of psychological, physical, financial or sexual abuse to residents or patients in the care of the health service.
A total of 14,509 complaints were made locally over the course of the last five years involving service users, family members, staff and strangers.
The figures released from Safeguarding Ireland breakdown the incidents between the countries 9 Community Healthcare Service areas.
In CHO 1, which includes Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan, 4,064 complaints were made between 2016 and 2020 to the HSE over alleged abuse from fellow service users, staff or family.
Of that figure, 828 reports were made last year, a drop from the previous 2 years.
Galway, Mayo and Roscommon are represented in CHO 2, where 3,441 people registered incidents of abuse over the five year period, with the levels dropping consistently since 2016.
Community Healthcare Service area 8 included counties Longford and Westmeath, where over 1,500 people reported abuse in 2020, part of a five year figure of 7,004, the largest level locally.
Nationally, a total of over 10,200 'concerns' of abuse were made in 2020 - with a fifth of those said to be family members.
