Close to 200 vehicles were licensed as taxis or hackneys in the Shannonside region last year. Taxis can be hailed and are identified by a yellow sign on the roof, while Hackneys are for private hire only and must be pre-booked. The CSO report provided a breakdown of a variety of vehicle types which were under license in 2023. The data shows that the figure of licensed taxis increased last year compared to 2022.

Roscommon had the highest number of registered taxis in the region at 56, with a further 40 hackneys on the records for 2023. This figure is followed by Longford, at a total of 51 taxis and 13 hackneys. Leitrim had the lowest number in the region at just 12 hackneys and 30 taxis. A total of 137 taxis and 65 hackneys were registered in the Shannonside region last year, an increase on the previous year. Nationally, 15,081 taxis were under license in 2023.
