Almost 2,000 AIB customers got debt write-off of over 90%

Serious concerns have been raised after it emerged nearly 2,000 AIB borrowers got debt write-offs of more than 90 per cent following the financial crash.

The bank says these deals accounted for just over 1 per cent of the roughly 150,000 customers who were helped by the bank's debt support unit.

The 1,900 customers who received such write-downs does not include those who went through bankruptcy or insolvency processes.

Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness says he is concerned about the level of debt that was written off.

The bank will have to explain to the committee how they made all of these decisions, not just in one case, but in all of the cases, profiling cohorts of customers , writing off significant debt.
