Gardai across the Shannonside region responded to almost 2,000 calls of domestic abuse incidents in 2021.
The figures reveal a 64 percent spike in the number of callouts in the Sligo/Leitrim division during the two years of Covid restrictions.
Gardai in the Sligo/Leitrim area responded to 1073 incidents of domestic violence in 2021, that’s compared to 652 in 2019.In the Roscommon/Longford Division there were 1168 callouts last year, an increase of 366 in just two years, a 45 percent rise.
Gardai determine domestic abuse cases under a number criteria which includes a breach of a barring, protection or safety order, domestic sexual assault or any incident which they believe records a motive for violence.
The figures were released to Deputy Peader Toibin by the Department of Justice, he says it’s the tip of the iceberg as many domestic abuse and violence cases go unreported.
Meanwhile, Gardai have responded to 1166 calls of domestic abuse across the Shannonside region so far in 2022. 591 have been in the Roscommon/Longford division with a further 575 in the Sligo/Leitrim area.
