Almost thirty people from across the Shannonside region have contacted a new state agency in an effort to trace down their birth information.
Earlier this month a new service was launched to allow people find out information about their early life, care and medical information.
The Birth Information and Tracing act allows people who were either adopted, boarded out, or the subject of an illegal birth registration, full right of access to birth certificates, birth and early life information. 13 applications for information have been made by people living in Roscommon, nine by Longford residents and six by people with an address in County Leitrim- the lowest number in the country.
Patricia Carey is the CEO of the Adoption Authority of Ireland. She says it's great to see so many people engage with the service already
"We were expecting significant numbers, upwards in the thousands, and I think by the end of the year we'll have multiple thousands. This has been long-awaited legislation, legislation that has been mooted since 1984 giving adopted people and others a right to information about their own identity. We're not surprised at all, we're glad and heartened that the information campaign that has been run has reached so many people".
