Almost 60 million euro in damages has been paid out by hospitals in the Saolta group up to August of this year
The figure is an increase of over 200 per cent on figures for the entirely of last year.
The Saolta Hospital group manages facilities in the Shannonside region including the Roscommon, Portiuncula, and Sligo University Hospitals.
New figures published by the Minister for Health reveal the group has paid out over 60 million euro in damages so far this year, an increase of 252 percent from the 2021 figure of 17 million.
The figures are contained in a report compiled by the State Claims Agency which shows that the Dublin Midlands group, which includes Tullamore hospital, has paid out 36 million euro to date.
This compares to a 2021 figure of €21.9m
€16.9 million has been paid out by the Ireland East Hospital Group so far this year, which includes Mullingar, down on last year's figure of 51.5 million.
Across all hospital groups over 175 million euro has been paid out in damages this year alone.
In a statement to Shannonside FM, the State Claims Agency confirmed claims and payouts were made under the Clinical Indemnity Scheme and under this scheme, claims can be made against any professional medical service provider for damages incurred in the process of receiving care
