Almost €28 million was spent on strengthening local roads in the Shannonside Northern Sound region last year.
The latest figures from the National Oversight and Audit Commission show that over 340 kilometres of local roads underwent strengthening works during that period.
The Local Authority Performance Indicator report shows that over €27.6 million was spent across Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim in 2022.
Roscommon County Council were the biggest spenders with over €7.1 million on 129 kilometres of road surface. The Cavan local authority strengthened 42.8 kilometres to the tune of €6.1 million, while Monaghan County Council invested over €5.3 million on almost 36 kilometres.
Meanwhile, Leitrim spent over €5 million on 79 kilometres, and over 56 kilometres of local road surfaces were strengthened in Longford at a cost of €3.8 million.
Nationally, a sum of over €246 million was spent strengthening over 2,100 kilometres of road surface by local authorities.
