An Open Day is being held this afternoon between 2 and 5 o' clock at Custume Barracks in Athlone.
Families of members of the Defence Forces, as well as members of the general public are being invited to go and see the barracks which is the oldest continually occupied military site in Europe.
The day will involve displays of equipment as well as guided tours.
Lieutenant Stephen McEvoy says there's a lot for people to see, and it also gives the Defence Forces the opportunity to let people know about what happens on the site…
"We will have weapons on display that we currently use and some vintage weapons on display also, there will be military vehicle displays of current and vintage vehicles. We will also have some artillery weapons on display, the military museum will also be open and there will be guided barrack tours happening on the day at 3 0 clock and 4 o clock."
"This also gives us a chance to the display what we do here and the opportunity to showcase Custume barracks and promote ourselves in the local community."
