Reacting to criticism from local public representatives, An Post's Public Affairs Manager said it would have been inappropriate to attend a public meeting

An Post has defended its decision not to attend a meeting in Roscommon to discuss changes to the local service. The postal service announced plans last week that the service will be run by a contractor and most likely move from its current location on the Square. Reacting to criticism from local public representatives, An Post's Public Affairs Manager said it would have been inappropriate to attend a public meeting. Angus Laverty said An Post had just announced its future plans to staff and had not yet advertised the contract for Roscommon town.

Yesterday, Mr Laverty had indicated that he was happy to attend a meeting with councillors and public representatives. However, he said he had no alternative but to withdraw after he learned the meeting would be streamed online. Meanwhile, people in Roscommon town have been reacting to the news the post office could be moved from its current location. This woman says it's a shame the iconic building will no longer house the local postal service:
