The post office in the county town will now be run by a contractor and will most likely move from its current location on the Square.

It has been confirmed that a representative from An Post will attend a special meeting of Roscommon County Council this evening to discuss the matter.

It comes following an emergency meeting of local councillors and Oireachtas members in Gleeson's Townhouse last night.

Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott says the closure of the iconic building was a further blow for Roscommon.

The Roscommon branch will join 95 per cent of the country's 900 plus post offices and become a contractor-run post office.

The company said staff will be offered a number of options including taking up employment with the new Postmaster or deployment elsewhere in the An Post network.

A new digital stamp has also been introduced.
