Anniversary event hears of Colm Horkan's everlasting bravery

Detective Garda Colm Horkan has been remembered in the community of Castlerea this lunchtime on the 1st anniversary of his death.

The Garda Commissioner Drew Harris along with colleagues, family and friends of Colm were in attendance at the unveiling of two plaques in the town.

Colm's father Marty Horkan firstly unveiled a plaque at the location where the detective garda was tragically killed in the line of duty.

A second plaque was then unveiled at Castlerea Garda station.

The plague located at Castlerea Garda Station also being dedicated in memory of Detective Garda John Morley and Garda Henry Byrne who also died in the line of duty in July of 1980 near Loughglynn.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris speaking at the unveiling of the plague in Castlerea today said it was a solemn day and a day that celebrates Colm's life.

He said Colm loved being a Garda Síochána member and he devoted his life to the people of Ireland and especially the people of Roscommon and Mayo.

Colm Horkan served the people of Roscommon for 24 years between Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen.

Drew Harris said that Colm was a hero and he said he showed so much bravery on the night of his tragic death making sure others in the community that he served were safe.
