A Castlerea boxer is now considered one the greatest in the world after Aoife O'Rourke retained her European title over the weekend.
She has become the second person since Katie Taylor to hold onto the accolade.
The local boxer scored a unanimous points victory over Elzbieta Wojcik of Poland to win gold in the final of the middleweight division
Sunday World sporting journalist and Leitrim native Sean McGoldrick says it was a huge achievement for the West Roscommon woman. It's the second time Aoife has won a European title, following on from her initial success in Madrid in 2019 against the same opponent
The Roscommon woman arrived back to huge crowds in Castlerea on Sunday evening. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show Sean says women are representing the sport exceptionally well.:
"You look through the last ten years we've had a lot of success in women's boxing so we are lucky to have the O'Rourke sisters and Amy Broadhurst and Kellie Harrington and we have some exceptional boxers. We are recognised as one of the world leaders in boxing."
