A Roscommon resident is calling for changes in the law which would allow local communities to come together and take action to clear their roads.
Sean Brown, who lives on a local road between Tarmonbarry and Rooskey, says the road is very dangerous in freezing conditions and many people have had damage to their cars as a result of slipping off the route over the past number of years.
He says he's disappointed he was told the local council couldn't give salt or gritting supplies to the local community to allow them to improve conditions on the road.
The 75-year old says people are allowed to take legal action if their car is damaged by a pothole, and people whose cars get damaged as a result of icy roads should be afforded similar rights if they not allowed to make the route safe themselves:
