Family members or friends who suspect their loved one may be suffering domestic violence are being urged to approach the situation carefully.
The Domestic Violence Unit at Longford Women's Link is advising people to take care and listen to the victim in the first instance.
The unit provides supports to women and children experiencing domestic violence with services including court accompanying, counselling and connections to practical supports.
With domestic and gender based violence levels on the increase over the Christmas period, the service is warning people that despite the best of intentions, the situation can be worsened without significant care.
Natalie O'Reilly is the Manager of the Longford Women's Link DV unit and has this advise for people who are concerned about l:
"Take it very slow and be that listening ear. Try not to be judgmental and jump in with your opinion what you think they should do because this woman who has this experience in this domestic violence is the expert in her own environment for her and her children. She knows the decisions that she makes are the safest at that time. So try and be patient and go at her pace."
