The Athlone and Midlands Samaritans Branch is looking for volunteers.
The service based in Athlone celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.
Over 90 volunteers at the Athlone branch took over 22,000 calls in total last year and the service runs 24/7.
One of the first Athlone volunteers, Anne McGrath says it doesn't require any particular set of skills and people will be fully trained for a number of weeks before they answer their first call.
Anne believes her work with the Samaritans has helped in other parts of her life, and she encourages anyone interested to get in contact.
"Samaritan volunteers are ordinary people with no special qualifications. All we need is that they can give 3 hours a week to do a duty and you get trained and you are fully prepared before you pick up the phone to take your first call. The training was quite intense but very enjoyable and I have to say, even in my private life, it has stood to me".
