Athlone chef calls for hospitality VAT rate to be reduced

Many restaurants are opting for cheaper, imported produce, which the chef says is compromising the authenticity of local restaurants.

Local restaurants "might as well become a generic Starbucks."
That is the view of chef Feargal O'Donnell, who owns "The Fatted Calf" restaurant in Athlone Town.
It's believed the number of restaurants which will close since the 13.5% VAT rate was introduced will be more than 600 in 12 months.
Feargal O'Donnell has been vocal about reinstating the 9% VAT rate and to introduce new supports for restaurants in the upcoming Budget.

Many restaurants are opting for cheaper, imported produce, which the chef says is compromising the authenticity of local restaurants.
He explained that if the crisis in the hospitality sector persists, there will be knock-on effects on local food producers:
