An Athlone councillor is calling for essential workers in the Direct Provision system to be placed in own door accommodation during the pandemic.
Councillor Lousie Heavin submitted the motion at a recent meeting of the Moate-Athlone Municipal District to call on the Ministers for Justice and Health to provide the dedicated accommodation.
The green party councillor says many of these workers have been taken out of the crowded direct provision centres and placed in B&Bs, hostels and other temporary housing.
She says these temporary accommodations are not suitable for essential workers as they lack the proper separate facilities for them to wash, cook and live away from others:
