Athlone Councillor Paul Hogan has joined the Independent Ireland Party ahead of June's local elections. The Athlone man announced his intention to contest the election under the new political party, that includes Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice and MEP hopeful Ciaran Mullooly.
Cllr Hogan was elected to the local authority in 2004 as a Sinn Fein Councillor, but lost his seat in the 2019 local elections, having left Sinn Fein the year before. He regained his seat after a controversial co-option in the wake Jamie Moran stepping down, who's father, former TD Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, also sought the seat. Councillor Hogan says he plans to continue to focus on issues such as the housing crisis, broadband provision and tackling anti-social behaviour.
