Long-serving Athlone councillor Aengus O'Rourke wants to run for Fianna Fáil in the general election in Longford-Westmeath. The party has opened nominations for selection conventions which will be held later this month, one in each county in the constituency

Current TDs Joe Flaherty, from Longford town, and Robert Troy, from Ballynacargy, have confirmed they are looking to retain their seats. O'Rourke has confirmed he also wants to run, and believes Fianna Fáil should run three candidates:
