An Athlone councillor says it's wholly inappropriate to use the Railway Field in the town centre as a bus maintenance depot.
Following a meeting of this month's Athlone-Moate MD, it's understood that the long awaited Railway Field Road, between the Crescent Junction and St Vincent's Care Centre must now go through a new planning process.
Councillor Louise Heavin says this is due to the inclusion of a CIE bus parking and maintenance facility that was not included in the design during consultation.
The Green party representative believes this is not the place for a depot to be located, and she is now proposing that CIE move the proposed facility to a site on the market by An Post close to the town's bypass.
Councillor Heavin believes the land should be used as an open space or for the development of housing.
