Cathal Joyce was lucky to have people around him who knew CPR and how to use a defibrillator when he had a cardiac arrest while he was warming up for a match in 2015

A local GAA player is urging members of the public to learn how to administer CPR.

Athlone man Cathal Joyce suffered a heart attack on the Gaelic pitch as he warmed up for a match in 2015.

He was revived following 3 rounds of CPR and a shock with a defibrillator.

The call comes following a similar incident during Denmark's Euro 2020 clash against Finland on Saturday, where Christian Eriksen collapsed mid game following a heart attack.

The footballer has returned to the pitch and has gone on to train adults and children across the region in CPR.

According to medical experts over 50 per cent of people who suffer serious cardiac arrest outside of hospital survive if rapid CPR is administered.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Cathal says CPR is a simple lifesaving skill that everyone should know.
