A local disability awareness group is being praised for its role in making Athlone more wheelchair friendly.
Westmeath County Council has confirmed that it will hope to develop a special changing area for people with disabilities next year after receiving the green light from government.
The 'changing room' will be located at the Civic offices in the town, and is the latest in series of improvements made to the town centre to allow people with mobility issues or disabilities easier access.
Funding of €75,000 has been made available for the project.
Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council Frankie Keena says the Athlone Access awareness group deserve huge credit for their campaigns to highlight the challenges facing hundreds of people every day.
