Two Athlone students have been elected to represent the Shannonside region on the Irish Second- Level Students Union.
Sam Brooks of Athlone Community College and Gearoid McCarty of Marist College have been appointed regional officers for Longford-Westmeath area.
Second-level students in Ireland are represented by the ISSU, which champions student welfare and rights nationwide.
Sam was re-elected for a second term, while Gearoid was elected for the first time.
Over 13,000 second-level students across Longford and Westmeath will be represented by them and they will work alongside TDs and Councillors throughout their term.
Sam has been giving his reaction to being elected:
'The day was really rushed and we had a panel with local TDs and Councillors.
That ran over because obviously they really want to engage with decision makers.
We didn't actually find out the results straight away so when it finished I though there was no chance.
But it was announced and I thought it was really really good.'
