A walk in solidarity with the people of Gaza will take place in Athlone this afternoon. The Athlone Palestinian Solidarity will hold the event in order to draw attention to the human cost of the ongoing war in the territory. More than 40,000 men, women and children have been killed in Gaza since the Israeli offensive began close to one year ago.
Attendees will gather at St. Mary's Square at 2pm and walk to St Peter's Square where a vigil will take place in memory of those killed. The group is also hoping to draw attention to violence against Palestinians outside of Gaza in areas such as the West Bank. The Athlone event is one of multiple events happening around the country this weekend.
