An Athlone school principal says he believes the Department of Education will have taken anxiety about teacher assessment into account before announcing the new Leaving Cert reforms.
Michael Dermody who manages the Marist College in Athlone says the new reforms will be broadly welcomed, but the devil will be in the detail, particularly regarding teacher assessment.
The two main teachers unions have already said they oppose any plan involving members assessing their own students, but the Department says the State Examinations Commission will also moderate the assessments.
The Athlone principal says he hopes issues can be worked out so that everyone will have full confidence in the new process.
