A special campaign is being mounted by TUS Athlone in an effort to resolve some of the expected chaos when it comes to students trying to find accommodation this year.
With a major shortage of housing over the last year, many properties that would have been rented to students in previous years have now been sold.
Many properties have also been taken up by refugees from Ukraine who won't be able to vacate in a few months.
Some students are having to commute long distances to college, while others have had to rely on 'sofa surfing' at friends accommodation for weeks at a time.
Josephine Feehily who's Chair of the Board of Governors at TUS and is a former Chair of the Revenue Commissioners says the issue is so big that TUS is setting up a special administration unit this year to help the Students union.
We would be very keen to encourage members of the community, who want to support their local university, and also who want to maybe earn a few bob, which is largely tax free , unless they earn more than €14,000 in a year , in the winter where maybe they may be tightening their belts, to encourage them to get in touch with us in Athlone.
We're setting up a special marketing campaign, which we haven't had to do other years.
Also TUS is putting in place an administration unit to support the students union because it's a vast challenge for them now.
