O'Rourke says he has now withdrawn because Fianna Fáil has decided to run only two candidates.

Athlone councillor Aengus O’Rourke has pulled out of the general election race in Longford-Westmeath.

Fianna Fáil sought nominations recently for upcoming selection conventions in the constituency – one for each county.

The party’s current TDs in the area, Longford town’s Joe Flaherty and Ballynacargy’s Robert Troy, are both seeking to retain their seats.

O’Rourke was also nominated and was hoping the party would run three candidates.

But he says he has now withdrawn because Fianna Fáil has decided to run only two.
