Residents in the Attirory area of Carrick-on-Shannon say they are "reeling in shock" since being told last week that their area could be used for the Carrick/Dromod by-pass project.
Public Consultation on the by-pass began towards the end of last year and Leitrim council announced the second consultation period last week.
A preferred option for a by-pass was identified almost 20 years ago, but the project was put back on the drawing board with several others when recession hit in 2008.
It's understood a number of new options are now being considered by the consultants once again, and one of them would take in the Attirory area on the outskirts of the town.
An action group and online petition has been set up over the past weekend to campaign against the proposal.
Jennifer King says people in the area have been shocked to learn of the potential intrusion in their area.
Resident Caroline Burke outlined her concerns when speaking to MaryClaire Grealy on Let's Talk.
