A Defence Forces audit at Custume Barracks in Athlone has valued a gym and equipment at the barracks to be worth over €150,000.
The audit of the 6th Infantry Battalion Gym account began in April of this year and was the first audit of the account since it was established in 2019.
The current value of the account is €155,626 including inventory stock valued at €134,319 and fixed assets worth over 20,000 euro (€21,307).
Among the items of stock assessed during the audit include four treadmills valued at a total of €14,000 and two elliptical trainers valued at a total of €7373.
Overall auditors found no significant issues and the account is effectively operating.
The audit team recommended that all stock in the climbing location be accounted for on the Management Information Framework and all stock items with serial numbers have them displayed clearly
Another audit took place of the artillery regiment ordnance account but much of the information was redacted but no issues arose during health and safety checks.
In a statement to Shannonside FM, the Defence Forces says an independent and objective internal audit service is a key element of good governance and the findings in the audit reports, of Substantial Assurance, shows the Department's and the Defence Forces' commitment to ensuring the proper oversight and management of all stocks purchased with public funds.
