Councillor Tom Crosby is rejecting suggestions Ballaghaderreen's controversial public realm project can be completely changed.
Sinn Fein TD Claire Kerrane made the proposal at a major rally on Sunday afternoon - and it was backed by several politicians.
Some residents believe the loss of 47 car-parking spaces will close businesses in the town.
Deputy Kerrane says the planning permission granted for the project can be changed by Roscommon County Council.
But councillor Crosby backs the plan and is dismissing that.
Ballaghaderreen auctioneer James Kilcoyne says the plans will kill business in the town.
