Ballaghadereen Public Realm protests enter second day

Protesters say the removal of car parking spaces will result in a decrease in footfall and make the town a no-go area for delivery vehicles.

A protest against public realm works in Ballaghadereen has resumed this morning for it's second day.

Retailers and residents returned to the streets of the town early this morning to highlight their objection to the loss of on street parking in the town.

Business people claim the project, which was given the go ahead by Roscommon County Council, will be detrimental to the local economy.

They say the removal of car parking spaces will result in a decrease in footfall and make the town a no-go area for delivery vehicles.

In a statement to Shannonside FM News, Roscommon County Council state that the project will see the loss of 47 car parking spaces on street and on the square.

They have promised to improve access and signage to the 72 space Plots Carpark off Barrack Street as a result.

Local Sinn Fein TD Claire Kerrane says the use of this car park is problematic for a number of reasons.
